Voodoo, also known as Vodou, Vodun, Vodoun or Voudun originated in the West Indies country of Haiti during the French Colonial period. It is a Caribbean religion mixed from African religions and catholic Christianity. Voodoo is a very common religion in Haiti, with most of the population practicers of voodoo.
Voodoo came into Haiti as a way to help the people. When the French came and colonised Haiti, they brought along the Roman Catholic Church. As most people were originally west-African slaves, they already knew about voodoo. Yet, voodoo become more prominent when the French colonised. The French didn't approve of voodoo and wanted everyone to be Catholics. The Haiti people practiced their voodoo behind closed doors more often as they didn't want to follow the Catholic Church that was forced upon them. It has now passed down through generation to generation and roughly 50% of Haiti practice Voodoo as there main religion today.
